How lax gun laws drive police militarization

The problem the police have is that they, understandably, feel that they need to be as well equipped as the worst-case scenario they might have to face. If they might have to face down the equivalent of an infantry squad, they’ll want MRAPS and body armor. If nobody has that firepower outside of the military, then the police won’t feel the need to gear up to military levels. The Las Vegas shooter literally had the equivalent firepower of an entire infantry squad – both in number of weapons and in capabilities. All legally purchased. No wonder the police want armored vehicles.
