Conspiracy Theories

I don’t have much use for conspiracy theories. Most of what happens in the world can be explained with basic sociology and economic analysis. Positing that some secret group is pulling the strings and always getting exactly what they want is a kind of intellectual short-cut that serves to make sense of the world without doing all the work of mastering the detail of how things actually function. This is not to say that groups of powerful people aren’t constantly conspiring. And this isn’t to say that the system isn’t rigged in a way that some people will pretty much always come out on top no matter what happens. But I disbelieve the part that assumes that whatever has already happened (no matter how strange) was actually pre-ordained by a group that got exactly what it was aiming for. In a human society as large and complex as ours, no one has that kind of power.
